چکیده

Prior research in the visual world paradigm has shown that copresent depicted events rapidly influence on-line structural disambiguation. The generality of this finding, however, is uncertain, since these studies relied on the visual co-presence of the depicted events, and on highly non-stereotypical stimuli which may have increased the salience of visual information. We conducted three visual world experiments to address these concerns. The first experiment used more plausible stimuli than prior studies. The second experiment investigated the disambiguation effect for prior events using the “blank screen” paradigm. In the third experiment, actions were animated and completed before the utterance started. While a disambiguation effect was found in all three experiments, the first and second showed an additional speed-up compared to previous studies while the third suggests competition with visual factors.

The influence of the immediate visual context on incremental thematic role-assignment: evidence from eye-movements in depicted events.

Studies monitoring eye-movements in scenes containing entities have provided robust evidence for incremental reference resolution processes. This paper addresses the less studied question of whether depicted event scenes can affect processes of incremental thematic role-assignment. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants inspected agent-action-patient events while listening to German verb-second s...

The Meaning of Syntactic Dependencies

This paper discusses the semantic content of syntactic dependencies. We assume that syntactic dependencies play a central role in the process of semantic interpretation. They are defined as selective functions on word denotations. Among their properties, special attention will be paid to their ability to make interpretation co-compositional and incremental. To describe the semantic properties o...

Visual Context Effects on Thematic Role Assignment in Children versus Adults: Evidence from Eye Tracking in German

Prior research has shown that adults can make rapid use of visual context information (e.g., visual referential contrast and depicted agent-action-patient events) for syntactic structuring and disambiguation. By contrast, little is known about how visual context influences children’s language comprehension, and some results even suggest children cannot use visual referential context for syntact...

A Semantic Process for Syntactic Disambiguation

Structural ambiguity in a sentence cannot be resolved without semantic help. We present a process for structural disambiguation that uses verb expectations, presupposition satisfaction, and plausibility, and an algorithm for making the final choice when these cues give conflicting information. The process, called the Semantic Enquiry Desk, is part of a semantic interpreter that makes sure all i...

Applying Constraints derived from the Context in the process of Incremental Sortal Specification of German ung-Nominalizations

Many German nominalizations with the affix -ung are sortally ambiguous. Within a sentence, lexico-semantic and/or syntactic phenomena may support disambiguation. The sortal interpretation of a nominalization may vary depending on the underlying syntactic analysis of one and the same, syntactically ambiguous sentence. We model the process of sortal disambiguation as a constraint-based incrementa...
